Biography

Birth and Early Years

Willy and Bob Sullivan

Wilfred John Sullivan was born on June 17, 1917 at home on 38 Colonial Drive, Dorchester (a section of Boston), Massachusetts. Wilfred was known as "Billy" or "Willy" to his parents, siblings, and other relatives.

Wilfred is the twin of Anita E. (Sullivan) Hucksam. In addition to Anita, Wilfred had two other siblings: Robert, born on July 31, 1915, and Barbara born on June 24, 1923. Wilfreds' godparents were Jackie and Kitty Downey, friends of his parents.

Wilfred's parents were Edward Sullivan, a custodian, and Florence (LeBlanc) Sullivan, formerly a teacher. His grandparents, on his father's side, were Edward Sullivan, a waiter and porter, and Mary Donovan. Both of these grandparents were born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States in the 1860's. Wilfred's grandparents, on his mother's side, were Louis LeBlanc, a carpenter and builder, and Adelia Wanders. Louis was born in Nova Scotia and Adelia was born in Boston.

Youth and Education

During his youth, Wilfred enjoyed helping his father and assisted him in the construction of the Sullivan family's summer cottage in East Bridgewater, Mass. He also helped his father with various tasks after school in his father's job as a custodian in the Boston public schools. In addition, Wilfred held temporary jobs at a hotel on Cape Cod (see photo at right) and in the Post Office during high school. For activities, Wilfred played the trumpet for several years and participated in the marching band in both junior and high school.

Wilfred survived the economically-lean Depression years during his youth and consequently learned to be thrifty. For example, when he first owned a car he wold drain the radiator of water every night, and refill it in the morning, to save the expense of purchasing antifreeze. This worked well until Wilfred forgot to drain the radiator one night and the water froze and the engine block cracked.

Wilfred graduated from Dorchester High School in 1935. He continued his education at the Training School for Teachers in Mechanical Arts in South Boston. He studied carpentry and metalworking at the Training School and graduated in May, 1940. Wilfred taught as a substitute teacher in industrial arts classes, but gave up teaching to pursue his career in the Postal Service.

World War II

Wilfred joined the United States Navy in April, 1942. He was trained to be a radar repairman and achieved the rank of Aviation Electronic Technician First Class. He took radar and electronics courses at Texas A&M University and later at Ward Island (near Corpus Christi), Texas. He also played in the Navy band while in training in Texas. Wilfred was stationed in Hawaii; Beaufort, South Carolina; and San Juan, Puerto Rico during the war.

Wilfred received the following decorations during the war: World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in January, 1946.

Marriage and Family

Wilfred married Katherine Ida Fenter on April 5 (Easter Sunday), 1953, at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. His best man was his older brother Robert (directly behind Wilfred in the photograph below).

Wilfred and Katherine had the following children:

Career and Hobbies

Wilfred began his career with the U.S. Postal Service as a temporary worker during his high school years. He received a series of promotions within the Postal Service and was eventually made Postmaster in the town of Holbrook in 1968. He retired in 1977.

Wilfred's favorite hobby is candlepin bowling; he has achieved a high score of 131. He enjoys watching both candlepin bowling and the Red Sox on television.

Residences

Wilfred and Katherine lived, for the first month of their marriage, at Wilfred's mother's home in Holbrook, Massachusetts, in 1953. They bought their own home on Rockwood Street in Holbrook (shown below) in May, 1953 and have lived there since that time. They also spend winters vacationing in Paradise Lakes Campground in Deltona, Florida.
